Dear families,
It was a thrill to see the energetic faces of the 5s and 6s coming to school yesterday after a big adventure. They had many stories to tell. Because the 5s we're going to be having so much fun I decided to try and activity I've been wanting to do for some time. The grade 4s spent the afternoons diving into a cardboard arcade project that used a lot of imagination and creative problem solving to construct games that would be fun to play and use the math principles of probability. They embraced the challenge joyfully and created many inventive games that they and the grade 5s played yesterday afternoon as a celebration. I was inspired to do this project by the video Caine's Arcade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U. I recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it already. The grade 4s will be presenting their arcade games during our Earth Day assembly on April 20th as an example of using recyclable material to invent games instead of consuming plastics. I went down the rabbit hole watching many DIY YouTube videos posted by kids about their cardboard creations. There's a neat set of tools that I ordered from the school board to make cardboard construction safer and easier: https://www.make.do/collections/all-products Science The School Cash Online form is available for the Scientists in School's visit on Tuesday. The cost after applying the funds form parent council is $6 per student. Please log into your schoolcashonline.com account to make the payment for these workshops. I know this Workshop comes on the coattails of a big trip for the grade 5s and the funds needed for it. April 3rd was the only day the presenters were able to do both workshops for the grade fives and sixes simultaneously. More info... On April 3rd we will be having workshops presented by Scientists in Schools. These workshops will nicely support our units on pulleys and gears for 4s and properties and changes in matter for the 5s. These units involve a lot of hands-on materials and Scientists in Schools is able to provide a cartload of supplies to make sure students get their hands on many different pulley and gear systems and safe chemical compounds for mixing and observing reactions. As teachers we received money from the parent council to be put towards learning activities for this year and I will be putting it towards this. The amount remaining to be covered is $6 per student. Jump Rope for Heart Jump Rope for Heart has been a huge success due to the fundraising efforts of many students and families!!
