Dear families,
I hope you’re having a nice weekend. In math we have moved into multiplying multiple numbers by one number in grade 4 (i.e., 3 x 657) and multiplying multiple numbers by two numbers in grade 5 (i.e., 34 x 784). Next week we will be looking at word problems that involve making these types of calculations. The math homework is to practice using the standard method of multiplying these types of numbers. We will be exploring other methods in class to increase understanding. Fall will involve a lot of skill building for basic operations and we will move into more project and creative applications once students have a solid foundation of number sense. Here are some helpful YouTube videos for reminders about the standard method of multiplying these types of numbers: One number on the bottom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ5qLWP3Fqo&t=42s Multi-digit part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ5qLWP3Fqo&t=96s Multi-digit part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVYwunbpMHA&t=424s English The room 109 mystery stories are taking shape! We’ve looked at character traits, setting, story mapping and plot arcs. The English homework this week is to gain a better understanding of how using descriptive sensory words can help the reader understand the experience. There were some moans and groans about the blind-fold, but I think it’s a key step in activating other senses. The goal is to find three words per square on the sheet but for trickier ones like sound, 1-3 words will do. Have fun :) Indoor Shoes As the weather gets muddier, just a reminder to have indoor shoes that will stay at the school and also be used for gym. We have a designated shoe rack for them in the class but it’s looking a little lonely at the moment. Water Bottles Water bottles are a a big help for staying hydrated during the school day. I'll be reminding students to take them home often to wash and rinse them out. We don't have a good setup for washing our bottles properly so I would encourage your child to keep bringing his or her water bottle home for regular washings. Filling bottles regularly with water from home is also a good idea because sometimes our cold tap runs hot/warm. Halloween costume, food, and parade info - a message from the office: What: Lord Lansdowne/da Vinci Annual Halloween parade SK – Gr 8 When: 1:30 pm on Tuesday, October 31 Where: We will gather in the schoolyard at 1:30 then follow our traditional route around the block: leave by the Spadina gate, down Spadina, along College and back up Robert St. If the weather prevents an outdoor parade, we will hold an indoor mini-parade so that children can see and enjoy each other’s costumes. Parents are welcome to join us, if you are able. Children may dress up, if they wish to – it is entirely voluntary. We know that there is a powerful use of the imagination when children take on a new identity through wearing a costume. For safety’s sake, please make sure that:
Please do not send any food that contains nuts or nut products to school. This is particularly important AFTER Halloween. We have children here with life-threatening allergies and must protect their safety. We recognize that some families do not participate in Halloween festivities, for religious or other reasons. If you do not wish to have your child participate in Halloween activities at school, please let your child’s teacher know by Thursday afternoon, October 27, and we will arrange alternate activities. Bon weekend! M. Quigg
