Dear families,
We are starting a spelling quiz homework routine that will focus on synonyms to make writing more exciting. The first round will last four weeks. The quizzes will be on each Thursday. Students copied the list of words on Friday. For the students who were away, here is a link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Vxp1Uc1JLwtl4KkdzGXvtrnoiLDQ5zIKNkV2y5P44z0/edit?usp=sharing There is also HW on equivalent fractions. Students who were away on Friday can pick up the sheet on Monday. A note from Mme Dungo: Thursday, April 5, 2018 Dear Parent/Guardian, For the remainder of term, we will be learning how to play the recorder for the 3/4 , 4/5 , 4/5 , 6 classes this year as part of the music curriculum. Through this instrument, the students will acquire musicianship, notation, composition and listening skills. For uniformity, the recorders have been purchased through the school’s distributor and are $6 each. We would like to have the monies in as quickly as possible and will ask to please hand it in by Monday, April 16, 2018. Please see attached hand-out regarding how to pay on-line. Thank you for supporting music education at Lord Lansdowne PS. Musically yours, Mme Dungo Bon weekend! M. Quigg

Dear families,
It was a thrill to see the energetic faces of the 5s and 6s coming to school yesterday after a big adventure. They had many stories to tell. Because the 5s we're going to be having so much fun I decided to try and activity I've been wanting to do for some time. The grade 4s spent the afternoons diving into a cardboard arcade project that used a lot of imagination and creative problem solving to construct games that would be fun to play and use the math principles of probability. They embraced the challenge joyfully and created many inventive games that they and the grade 5s played yesterday afternoon as a celebration. I was inspired to do this project by the video Caine's Arcade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U. I recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it already. The grade 4s will be presenting their arcade games during our Earth Day assembly on April 20th as an example of using recyclable material to invent games instead of consuming plastics. I went down the rabbit hole watching many DIY YouTube videos posted by kids about their cardboard creations. There's a neat set of tools that I ordered from the school board to make cardboard construction safer and easier: https://www.make.do/collections/all-products Science The School Cash Online form is available for the Scientists in School's visit on Tuesday. The cost after applying the funds form parent council is $6 per student. Please log into your schoolcashonline.com account to make the payment for these workshops. I know this Workshop comes on the coattails of a big trip for the grade 5s and the funds needed for it. April 3rd was the only day the presenters were able to do both workshops for the grade fives and sixes simultaneously. More info... On April 3rd we will be having workshops presented by Scientists in Schools. These workshops will nicely support our units on pulleys and gears for 4s and properties and changes in matter for the 5s. These units involve a lot of hands-on materials and Scientists in Schools is able to provide a cartload of supplies to make sure students get their hands on many different pulley and gear systems and safe chemical compounds for mixing and observing reactions. As teachers we received money from the parent council to be put towards learning activities for this year and I will be putting it towards this. The amount remaining to be covered is $6 per student. Jump Rope for Heart Jump Rope for Heart has been a huge success due to the fundraising efforts of many students and families!! We have reached our goal of $3300.00 to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Please take note of the following, including the CHANGE OF DATE FOR THE EVENT: 1) NEW DATE for JUMP ROPE FOR HEART: We have decided to postpone the event in order to hold it outside on Tuesday April 24th, Day 2. Apologies for any inconvenience. 2) DEADLINE for FUNDRAISING: If there are any students or families that would still like to fundraise, we will be accepting donations until the end of next week. The last day will be Friday April 6th 2018. 3) SUBMISSION of ENVELOPES: Students may submit their envelopes to their classroom teachers. Thanks again for your participation and support, and best wishes for the long weekend. Sincerely, The Jump Squad Happy Easter to the families who are celebrating. Bon weekend! M. Quigg Dear families,
It was an exciting first week back from March break with the Francofete activities and the gear up to the Island School trip for students in grade 5 and 6. Also this week, students began presenting their English paragraph writing project on the topic of either Indigenous Peoples in Canada or Residential Schools. The class has been listening very well to their fellow students present and we have had rich conversations following each presentation. I'm looking into having an Indigenous Elder come into the class and I will let you know more details as I find out more. Island School I'm so pleased that our grade 5's, and 2 years from now, the current grade 4's, have the opportunity to benefit from outdoor education. Our team of Junior grade teachers has made a careful selection of workshops that include: nature hikes and habitat discovery, orienteering and map reading in the residential areas of the island, art inspired by Indigenous traditions, and many other fun adventures. A note from the organizers is: Be sure to pack extra socks! Students in grade 4 will be with M. Suleman in the morning and me and the afternoon. In the afternoon we will be doing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) inquiry project that involves designing and building model elevators and other contraptions using pulley systems and lots of cardboard! Homework Because of the Island School trip and the paragraph writing project, the regular homework routines will start after the Easter long weekend. Math We have begun our unit on fractions which will shortly move into decimals and probability. An excellent to support the learning at home is to bake together as a family with recipes that call for fractions. Science On April 3rd we will be having workshops presented by Scientists in Schools. These workshops will nicely support our units on pulleys and gears for 4’s and properties and changes in matter for the 5’s. These units involve a lot of hands-on materials and Scientists in Schools is able to provide a cartload of supplies to make sure students get their hands on many different pulley and gear systems and safe chemical compounds for mixing and observing reactions. As teachers we received $100 from the parent council to be put towards learning activities for this year and I will be putting it towards this. There will be amount left over that will need to be covered by parents. I will let you know that amount (under $10) early next week and I will set up the school cash online form by Tuesday. Bon weekend! M. Quigg Dear families,
Our Class did an excellent job of leading the Day of Pink poster campaign. When you visit the school, be sure to walk around the hallways to look and the thoughtful messages and artwork. We had a fun week in Math of using different graphing methods to show the medal results of the Winter Olympics. We will continue our unit on Data Management and Probability until March break. Some ways explorations at home could be to look at monthly weather graphs: https://www.google.ca/search?q=monthly+weather+toronto&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-ab&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=gzp3Wtr8CO6fXuiUjZgD And to explore making graphs using this site: https://www.chartgo.com/ Homework for this week continues to be the paragraph writing project on either an Indigenous group or residential schools. Please scroll down for detailed information about the project posted earlier. Welcoming the Syrian family! Students with their families are welcome to come to the airport this Tuesday evening to welcome the Syrian family. Noura (Aran and Lara's mom) has been communicating with the family regularly and she says they are pleased to pass on their arrival info. The flight is arriving at Terminal 1 at 6:35pm (Turkish Airlines) TK17 from Istanbul. There is a Blue Clock at Terminal 1 where the family will be escorted to meet us. The Lord Lansdowne welcoming committee will meet there holding the banner and posters students have made. I’ll be there, too. Note: They probably won’t come out until 7:30 or 8. You can check updates on the flight schedule at: http://www.torontopearson.com/en/flights/schedules/# Also, you can track the flight while it is on its way, to get the latest actual info on arrival: http://flightaware.com/ A message from Mme Gooden Good day Parents/Guardians: A big thank you to for your help with making the crepe experience a success! Should you wish your child to write the Alliance Francaise's age appropriate level of written competence in French (DELF), please let me know and I can give you more information. The deadline is fast approaching but we still have time. The cost is $80 per student and the test would be written at the Alliance's North York location. Mme Gooden Please make sure all Grade 5 Island School Trip forms come in on Monday. Thanks. Last but not least, a huge congrats to the Junior basketball team! All the players played their hearts out during Wednesday’s tournament and we sure had fun cheering them on. Go Eagles! Bon weekend! M. Quigg Dear families,
We are gearing up for Pink Shirt Day coming up on Wednesday February 28th. We are encouraging all students to wear pink on Wednesday to send a message about inclusion. I’ve been inspired by the thoughtful poster ideas students have been coming up with to spread the message about inclusion, standing up to bullying and being an ally. Here is more info about Pink Shirt Day http://www.pinktshirtday.ca/ The Island School trip for grade 5 and 6 students. Students brought home the forms for the trip four day trip starting on March 26th. Please give the forms a careful read and sign and return them by this Friday at the latest. Many thanks! Crêpe making with Mme Gooden! Good day Parents and Guardians: This coming Thursday, March 1, the students will be solidifying their knowledge of The Parts of a Text - The Recipe, by making (and eating) crêpes in the Staff Room kitchen. Please review the ingredients of the recipe below and let me know, Mme Gooden, ahead of time whether or not your child is allergic to any of them. To ensure the success of this endeavour, we are kindly requesting approximately 3 parent volunteers. (We tentatively have one parent confirmed to attend.) Please contact Mme Gooden for more information: [email protected] In addition to the ingredients to the recipe, I am enclosing the utensils that are required. If you can lend us any of these utensils, even if you cannot attend, it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mme Gooden Syrian Refugee Family You may already have heard the good news that the family, after a very long wait and some strategic card and message making from our students to the PM's office, is finally arriving in early March! The family will be joining our local community, with their children attending Kensington school. The family consists of mother, father and two daughters, ages 4 and 7. Our class has been busy making six welcoming posters and all students in both schools will be participating in a Welcome to Canada banner on Thursday. The sponsoring group is looking for some final items to help the family get set up and feel welcome when they arrive. If you'd like to help, please check out the needs list on SoKind. The sponsors are aiming to have all items by the end of February. There is a drop-off point across from the school. Please send any questions about donations to [email protected]. Kind regards, M. Quigg Dear families,
Dawn and I enjoyed meeting with parents over the past two days. Here are a few resources that follow up on our conversations: French reading https://www.camptournesol.ca/40-french-books/ English reading Please take advantage of our excellent local children’s librarian at Lillian H. Smith. Joanne Schwartz will help your child find books that match his or her level and interest. M. Quigg Dear families,
We'll be having a Valentine's Day celebration Wednesday in which students will be sharing the personal valentines they have made as homework. If your child is stuck on alliteration or haiku ideas they can get inspired by looking online, but they need to make sure to write original mini-poems. - If they need more hearts or the instruction page they are below in last week's post. Food Students are welcome to bring low-sugar food to share with the class. Some ideas: pretzels, tortilla chips (without MSG), fruit kebabs, chocolate covered strawberries, popcorn (already popped). Many more ideas: https://www.pinterest.ca/produceforkids/healthy-valentines-day-ideas/ Valentine's Day is always a joyous day of the school year. Thanks for making sure everyone is included. A reminder that Friday is a PA day because of P-T conferences. Bon Weekend! M. Quigg Dear families,
Some highlights from this past week was our Math project on angles. Students drew pool tables using a sheet of chart paper and had to make “bank shots” to get five different balls in different pockets. They sharpened their protractor skills to calculate the angles required. Homework We did a lot of math in class this week and the homework over the next two weeks is an English writing task for Valentine’s day. We talked about the commercialization of holidays and how hand-made gifts are always more meaningful. The homework, due Valentine’s Day, is to write a personalized message for each student in the class. To make this easier, students will be creating six templates to use for multiple messages. Students took home the template page and the blank hearts for the writing activity. Here’s a link to the Google Docs for students who were away... Instructions and template: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U7t53EoXgo0cvAhULtVEJgc1vlU605cDV_KyQnISzc8/edit?usp=sharing Hearts: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SS5VvRXxi0N1o3ba4-n77yRjMJFhd_DZPko3fSzWuUY/edit?usp=sharing We talked as a class about how making the comments as personalized and creative as possible will make them more meaningful to give and to receive. I appreciate your help in making sure each student is putting in the time and effort. (This will be their only homework from me for the next two weeks.) A reminder that you are encouraged to join us for the: Cross-generational Dialogue: Parents and Students Building a Community of Allies Tuesday, February 6, 2018, Workshop begins promptly at 5:45 and ends at 8:15 PM at Lord Lansdowne Public School Led by Lord Lansdowne Community Builders, Student Leaders and Community Builders Trainers Together we will:

Parent-teacher conferences will be taking place on Thursday evening and Friday morning. This round of conferences is especially for students who need strategies for improving in different areas. Often parents like to wait until they see the report cards before scheduling a conference. That works for us, or you can, sometime this week, submit the form that went home this past week. Bon weekend! M. Quigg Dear families,
It was an exciting week with our tour of The Scott Mission on Tuesday and our Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra concert on Wednesday. It’s been neat reading the reflections the students wrote afterwards about their experiences. We have a unique location in the city being right beside a shelter and some students commented, “I always wondered what was behind that blue glass.” Trevor who guided the tour said they always need shoes and kids shoes especially. I’ll keep a labeled bin in the class marked The Scott Mission and feel free to bring in clothes or shoes throughout the year and we’ll take it over. Homework This week’s homework is a writing extension of the rich group discussions we’ve been having this week about homelessness and how people and cities can help those in need. Here’s the Google doc link in case your child was away yesterday: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r6mK3Hv7zjL71N_uVf18INBGoeF5ARWeYngTOmAxdlE/edit?usp=sharing There is a Math review page on the reverse with mental math questions. A note about homework completion I only received half of the English writing homework from last week which was to add 20-30 words to your personal dictionary. I give many reminders in class and we have a well established system but something didn’t work this past week. I would be grateful for your support in making sure homework gets completed. Many thanks. Mme Gooden wanted to add that there is a free French performance at the Alliance française: https://www.alliance-francaise.ca/en/culture/young-audience/temps-sucres-en Community Builders event Tuesday, Feb 5th Community Builders is the organization that has been leading workshops with LL students around inclusion and how to be an ally. iome students from our class, along with other grade 4,5 and 6 students, will be facilitating and hosting the events of the evening. The Prodigy launch has been met with much enthusiasm from students. I hope the exploration at home has been going well. Some questions involve material we have yet to cover such as operations involving fractions and decimals. We will cover this in the spring after our geometry unit. Homework Math: “Find the area” sheet. Continue playing Prodigy for roughly 1-2 hours per week. English: Add between 20 and 30 words to your personal dictionary. Find them in the book you're reading, newspapers, online, anywhere! These should be words that you have difficulty spelling.
